Friends

A piece of art

“It’s a collapsible sort of day”

Said one friend to another

Who was feeling a bit weary.

Outside the autumnal wind howled

And leaves of brown, red and gold

Swirled into piles

Rustling and chattering

On the asphalt.

It was a hunkering down sort of day

By the fire

With a pot of honey

And a cup of tea.

One friend was struggling

Running around

Doing bits of this and that

Packing house

Sorting mum’s stuff

One thing after the other

Hardly gave time to process

Her absence

And adjust to a motherless life.

The smell of her pink cardy

Rattling her into present reality

Yet comforting at the same time.

“Acceptance is a process”.

The other friend shared her story too

(As friends do)

And in doing so realised what she needed:

To be content with the pace she was going

Instead of wasting energy

Wishing she were somewhere else.

Their spontaneous exchange

Was mutually satisfying

Like honey for a rumbly tummy

And finding a lost cup of tea.
