Motivation and Self-Deprivation

Peel Forest, Canterbury, New Zealand

Motivation is a funny and sometimes elusive thing. I can waste a lot time waiting to be motivated before I do something, when in reality motivation works the other way around. You need to DO something then the motivation will come. I know this, yet choose not to heed this rule sooooo many times and with this choice comes self-deprivation.

Today I was in this very state…can’t be bothered, a bit miffed that life wasn’t going the way I wanted or think it “should”. After hours of avoiding doing what I knew would make me feel better, filling my time with unhelpful trivia, I decided to act on what I knew which was opposite to how I felt. I got off my backside and went for a walk.

Now I moved to the forest for this very thing and I can talk myself out of it quite easily. As soon as I got the forest track entrance I released a huge sigh, breathed in the smell of the musky earth deeply and questioned why I deprive myself of this.

What do you deprive yourself of because you lack motivation? I’d love to hear.

Action, even a small one, is the antidote to lack of motivation.
